Join our five-day wildflower and landscape tour through Western Australia’s Mid West, from the coast at Geraldton (Jambinu) to Kalbarri National Park and inland to Coalseam Conservation Park. Timed to the peak of the Mid West wildflower season, the trip visits Hutt Lagoon (the Pink Lake), the sandstone gorges of Kalbarri National Park, and the wreath flowers (an endemic species that grows naturally in only a small area of the region).

The tour is led by an experienced Mid West-based wildflower guide with working knowledge of the species flowering across the region. The trip pairs the well-known Mid West sites: the Pink Lake, Nature’s Window and the Kalbarri Skywalk (Kaju Yatka) 100 metres above the Murchison River Gorge, with those less widely known: the Murchison House Station campfire dinner, the wreath flowers at Coalseam, and an optional scenic flight to the Abrolhos Islands with time on East Wallabi Island.

The Mid West wildflower season runs from July through October, when the sandplains and ranges between Geraldton (Jambinu) and Kalbarri produce one of the largest wildflower displays in the country. Western Australia’s south-west is a Biodiversity Hotspot on the strength of its plant endemism, and the Mid West sits within that region – the wreath flower, the everlastings at Coalseam and hundreds of species restricted to particular sandplain, gorge and clay-pan habitats are what draw specialist wildflower travellers back each year.

Who Is This Tour For?

This tour is designed for travellers with a strong interest in wildflowers, botany, landscape photography and the natural history of Western Australia. Days involve short and moderate walks on uneven ground (sandplain, gorge rim, coastal cliff) with time at each site to observe and photograph. The Kalbarri Skywalk (Kaju Yatka) platforms sit 100 metres above the gorge and involve steady walking; the wildflower walks at Coalseam are on flat ground. Weather in August and September is cool to mild with light rain possible. Suitable for travellers with average general fitness who are comfortable on their feet for several hours a day.

Itinerary

Pink Lake, coastal cliffs and the Murchison Experience

Morning pickup from your Geraldton (Jambinu) hotel or the airport, then travel north to Kalbarri with stops at wildflower spots and historical sites along the way. Visit Hutt Lagoon (the Pink Lake), whose colour comes from the algae Dunaliella salina and shifts with the light through the day. Continue to the Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs, where sandstone cliffs meet the Indian Ocean and migrating whales and dolphins are seen seasonally offshore. The evening is spent at the Historic Murchison House Station with a campfire dinner beside the river; optional canoeing and short walks let you look for native orchids and other wildflowers. Overnight: Kalbarri. Meals: Morning Tea / Lunch / Dinner.
