Embark on a 12-day journey to Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australia’s two Indian Ocean territories. The first week is spent on Christmas Island with a professional local guide and a full daily program timed to the annual red crab spawning – the migration of tens of millions of red crabs from the forest floor to the sea to breed. The final four nights are on Cocos, largely self-guided, with time on the beaches, one guided motorised canoe tour of the southern lagoon, and an optional day-trip to Direction Island. Return group airfares from Perth are included.
The Christmas Island week is timed to catch the red crab spawning event, which follows a specific moon phase around November, December or January. On Cocos, the guided motorised canoe tour of the southern lagoon is the one scheduled group activity; the rest of your time there is self-directed, giving you room to explore two very different island communities at your own pace.
Christmas Island sits closer to Jakarta than to Perth. Its community carries a mixed Chinese, Malay and European heritage (a legacy of nineteenth-century phosphate mining recruitment) visible in the temples, cafés and place names across the island. Cocos, another 900 kilometres further west, has been home to a Cocos Malay community since John Clunies-Ross settled the islands in 1826. Both territories are small, remote and self-contained; the trip gives you a week in each.
