About This Tour

Journey to the remote tip of Australia on this immersive seven-day birding expedition through the Cape York Peninsula, one of the most biodiverse and rarely visited wilderness regions on earth.

Stretching from the tropical woodlands and wetlands of Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park to the lowland rainforests, gallery forests, and palm-fringed Coral Sea beaches of Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park, this tour covers an extraordinary range of habitats that support species found nowhere else in Australia.

Two true Cape York endemics anchor the target list, the endangered golden-shouldered parrot and the white-streaked honeyeater, alongside an exceptional assemblage of restricted-range tropical species, including palm cockatoo, eclectus parrot, red-cheeked parrot, yellow-billed kingfisher and birds-of-paradise. Night spotting sessions, mammal encounters and a visit to Artemis Station's golden-shouldered parrot conservation program add further depth to an expedition designed for serious birdwatchers seeking Australia's most extraordinary and inaccessible avian treasures.

Please note: This tour runs on a back-to-back drive/fly or fly/drive itinerary. You either drive up from Cairns to Lockhart River and fly back to Cairns after the tour (Drive/Fly) or you fly up to Lockhart River and drive back to Cairns (Fly/Drive with reversed itinerary).

Flights are not included and should be booked with Skytrans; please contact us at travel@ausgeotravel.com for more information.

Who is this tour for?

This expedition is ideal for dedicated birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts with a genuine passion for tropical endemic and restricted-range species. Some birding experience is beneficial though not essential, as the pace is focused and expert guidance is provided throughout. A moderate level of fitness is required, as some days involve full days of birding with early starts and walking on uneven natural terrain. Expect hot and humid tropical conditions typical of Cape York Peninsula, with the possibility of afternoon storms during the wet season. Please note that many locations visited on this tour are extremely remote, with limited mobile phone reception and basic facilities in some areas.

Highlights

  • Golden-shouldered Parrot at Artemis Station: Visit a working conservation property where grazing practices have been modified to protect the critically endangered golden-shouldered parrot, one of only two bird species endemic to Cape York Peninsula, nesting exclusively in termite mounds within specific woodland habitats.
  • Palm Cockatoo & Birds-of-paradise: Search the lowland rainforests and gallery forests of Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park for the iconic palm cockatoo, magnificent riflebird and trumpet manucode in some of the most pristine and biodiverse tropical habitats in Australia.
  • Cape York Endemics: Target both of Cape York's true endemic bird species across the seven days, the endangered golden-shouldered parrot in the tropical woodlands of Rinyirru (Lakefield) and the white-streaked honeyeater at Tozer Gap and Iron Range.
  • Restricted-range Tropical Specialists: Encounter a remarkable assemblage of species that reach their Australian range limits on Cape York Peninsula, including eclectus parrot, red-cheeked parrot, yellow-billed kingfisher, frill-necked monarch, black-eared catbird, and yellow-breasted boatbill.
  • Night Spotting in Iron Range: After-dark sessions in Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park target Papuan and marbled frogmouth, large-tailed and white-throated nightjar, and mammals including common spotted cuscus, striped possum, and Krefft's glider.
  • Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park: Spend a full day in Queensland's second-largest national park, exploring tropical woodlands, riparian forest, and extensive wetlands supporting outstanding concentrations of waterbirds, finches, raptors and grassland specialists.
  • Lockhart River Art Gallery: Close the expedition with a visit to the Lockhart River Art Gallery, showcasing remarkable works by the region's Indigenous artists and providing a meaningful insight into the deep cultural connections between Traditional Owners and this extraordinary landscape.
  • Accommodation: Six nights' accommodation (2026: two nights Musgrave Roadhouse, four nights The Greenhoose; 2027: one night Fairview Station, 1 night Musgrave Roadhouse and 4 nights Greenhoose)

Itinerary

Day 1

Gimuy/Cairns to Artemis Station & the Golden-shouldered Parrot

Depart Gimuy/Cairns and head north into Cape York Peninsula, travelling across vast expanses of tropical woodland with regular stops for incidental bird sightings along the way. Lunch at Lakeland precedes the afternoon arrival at Artemis Station, where conservation efforts focus on protecting habitat for the critically endangered golden-shouldered parrot, one of only two true endemic birds of the Cape York Peninsula. This remarkable parrot nests exclusively in termite mounds within specific woodland habitats, and Artemis Station's modified grazing practices demonstrate how land management can directly benefit threatened species. Overnight at Musgrave Roadhouse (2026 departures) or Fairview Station (2027 departures).
